It's flu shot season! If you're planning to get the shot for your kids and expecting a big fight, send me a message I can send you some ideas. I took my kids yesterday so this challenge is top of mind.
Meanwhile, here's one tip for inspiring cooperation and a book recommendation I know you'll love.
1. Magic Tricks for Kids Inspire Cooperation
Do you remember the excitement of seeing a magic trick as a child? I remember a time stopping, feeling engrossed, curious, and eager to be "in the know."
But my favorite part was doing tricks on others...especially card tricks. I felt so powerful knowing something others didn't.
You can use magic tricks to your advantage with kids.
Always keep a deck of cards handy - in your kitchen, bedroom, glove compartment and/or purse.
Capture their attention when they're ignoring you. "Hey, want to see a magic trick?" This is what I call "redirection with connection."
Teach them how to do a simple trick so they can strut their stuff with siblings and friends. Here's a very simple one for all ages:
Divide the deck into two piles - one with red cards and one with black cards. Lay one of the piles face down on your lap and fan out the other pile (face down) in front of your child. Ask them to choose a card and look at it for a while so they can memorize it. While they're doing that, secretly switch the two piles. Ask them to put their card back in the (other) pile. Now you can shuffle all you want and magically find their card - it will be the only mismatched color.
Even young kids can learn and practice this trick.

Let me know if you try it and how it goes.
2. Books Called "Boy Mom"
If you're in The Boy Mom Academy, then you know we get together to discuss books relevant to raising boys.
Next month, we're reading a book called Boy Mom.
When I first suggested this book, our group ended up with 3 different books by the same name.
I'm sure they're all interesting, but we're focusing next month on "Boy Mom: Reimagining Boyhood in the Age of Impossible Masculinity" by Ruth Whippman.
I loved every word of it. Some of it was hard to read and some moms I know had to put it down, only coming back to it after I assured them it ended well.
So, in addition to recommending that you join The Boy Mom Academy Book Club, I'm also letting you know this is a great read!
