Are You Shaming Your Son?

Writer's picture: Rachel SklarRachel Sklar

The ugly truth is that as parents, at some point, we all unintentionally blurt out statements that shame our sons.

If you do shame him, watch for signs like, them breaking eye contact or reacting worse to your words. These are tell-tale signs that you might have just shamed him.

Here are 4 statements to avoid:

1️ - "Act your age! You should know better!"

2️ - "What is wrong with you? Why would you do that?"

3️ - "You're overreacting. It's not a big deal."

Instead, let's choose curiosity and understanding. When they do something that would normally cause you to say this type of statement, take a deep breath and get curious about what’s going on, what happened, what their feelings are and show love, not judgment. Replace shame with connection for better behavior.

Share a scenario where you’ve used a statement like this in the comments!

We’ve all been there, name it to tame it!
